Muzzle Station Tour Itinerary

Please note that the order in which the tour proceeds could be altered or enhanced by weather or farm activities at the time.

Day 1: Departs from Blenheim, the town centre of Marlborough’s wine country, heading south along the scenic east coast. After the seaside township of Kaikoura we turn west into the Kaikoura inland route. Turning off at a locked gate we ascend to the dizzying heights of Blind Saddle, the mountainous gateway to the Clarence Reserve. In the valley below we stop at the historic Black Spur hut. In this magnificent setting, you will hear stories of the rabbiters and musters who once camped here. To get to the Muzzle Station homestead, we ford the braided Clarence River, some 80 metres wide. For the next 2 nights you will stay at the farm quarters at the Muzzle Station near the homestead where you will meet owners Guy and O (Fiona) Redfern.

Day 2: An opportunity to explore the station and relax. Limestone Hill offers magnificent views and jasper and gabbro 'gemstones' for the rock hounds. Depending on the weather we may travel onto the Palmer where fossils are found. You will hear stories from Lance your guide about the exciting events he has witnessed over the years while working here. If it is hot you may like to take a refreshing dip in the river and picnic in the shade of the willow trees.

Day 3: We head to the northern outpost of the station. On this day you will learn about the Muzzle’s farming practices and more stories. Morning tea is at Fordy’s hut, a spectacular spot for a selfie. Lunch is at the Ravine Hut which is a working musterer’s hut used as a base by the Muzzle team for calf marking and weaning. On the last night dinner is provided by the Redfern family in their home.

Day 4: We return to Kaikoura via the Muzzle Station and Clarence Reserve stopping to search for crystals at the Diamond Mine. Your finishing point is the beautiful seaside town of Kaikoura where you may like to stay for a few ways as there are many beautiful easy walks, a wonderful pelagic bird tour and a relaxing train trip to Blenheim, Christchurch or Picton.
